Cold Precautions to Prepare for Fall Weather

Since it’s November, the weather is turning colder, and we can see people sneezing and having runny noses, especially during the late fall and throughout winter. These symptoms are simply telling us – it’s cold and flu season. The common cold as well as the flu are usually routine diseases which are easy to spread. Symptoms of both involve the nose and throat. The cold is less dangerous and usually resolves itself within a week or two. Colds are generally, but it can be a bothersome disease. To prevent catching these, here are some precautions for you to take:

1. Get a Flu Vaccine

1

Getting a seasonal flu vaccine is one of the most effective ways to protect you against the flu viruses going around each year. Studies have found that in healthy adults, the flu vaccine can decrease the chances of coming down with the flu by as much as 90 percent, which means the vaccine works for almost everyone. But unfortunately, the flu vaccine can't prevent the flu in everyone. Though there's still a chance you could get sick, the flu vaccine can lessen the severity and duration of your symptoms.

2.  Wash Your Hands Frequently

2

Another of the most effective ways to prevent a cold or the flu is simply washing your hands properly and frequently. WHO (World Health Organization) encourages washing hands, so this will help to get rid of cold germs you picked up from doorknobs and stair rails, and keep you from getting them into your body. If you wash your hands for 20 seconds with warm, soapy water it will kill 75% of the germs present. If you wash them for 30 seconds it will kill 90% o the germs on your hands.

3. Drink Plenty of Fluids

3

General good health practices keep your body strong and ready to fend off cold germs and the flu virus. And that includes drinking plenty of water. In fact, one recent study found that staying hydrated might boost a particular immune response to enable your body to better fight the viruses. Stay hydrated by drinking a lot of fluids, especially water, and by avoiding caffeinated drinks like soda or coffee. Caffeine draws water out of the body so will dry you out.

4. Get Plenty of Sleep

4

While most students (especially Korean students find it difficult to get enough sleep each night,
it is essential, for good health, to get 8-10 hours of sleep each night. It will boost your immune
system and allow your body to recharge and refresh after a long day at school. This is even more
important when you are sick since your body uses a lot of energy fighting off any illness.

Remember to take care of yourself this year. By following these simple steps your will reduce
your chances of getting sick, infecting others and missing school.

Be Careful of Food Poisoning

5

All people eat food. In the past and today foods is important to us. However, food can also cause some very bad problems. Some food is healthy and some is bad for us, so we must be careful about what we eat. Many people know about what we should not eat, such as spoiled milk, or rotten foods. But not everybody knows we can get a disease if we eat bad food. This is called food poisoning, it is very common. Now I will tell you about food poisoning and what we should do if we get it.

6

Food poisoning happens when we eat food with special toxins in it. There are different reasons we might feel sick in our stomach. For example, gastroenteritis is different than food poisoning but will also make out stomach hurt. We usually get food poisoning when we eat dirty or rotting food. Mostly gastroenteritis is caused by our daily habits such as stress in our life, from work or school.

8

Food poisoning virus is very dangerous to us, it can make us a little sick, very sick or even kill us. We must always be careful about what we eat and how we handle the food before we eat it. After we contract this virus, we must be very careful. We must try and keep our stomach calm so we shouldn’t eat spicy, salty, cool, or oily foods. We must take the correct medicine as often as the doctor tells us. Also we should always drink a lot of water, at least 300ml of water or juice and try to eat liquid foods like gruel or soup. Food poisoning is contracted more often in the summer because the weather is so hot! So many foods are rotten.

9

When we contract food poisoning, we will often have stomach ache, vomiting, diarrhea and fever. These symptom are similar to other disease such as gastroenteritis. Many people don’t know what food poisoning symptom are! So we need to be more careful about this virus. When we have vomiting, diarrhea or a fever our body loses a lot of water. This is why we need to drink a so much water, to keep our bodies from becoming dehydrated, so it can get healthy easier.

10

In the summer, when it is hot, the virus is more powerful than in the winter when the weather is cold. More people get food poisoning in the summer and that is why we need to be more careful. In the summer we should eat boiled food, also certainly boil our water before we drink it, if it does not come from a very clean place. We should not put cooked food in the refrigerator. When we go outside and then back into the house, we should wash our hands with hot soapy water for 20 seconds. Also, always keep our kitchen clean. This is so important. If our kitchen is dirty our food could get dirty easily. However we should not only do these things in the summer.

It is still possible to get sick in the winter, because the virus can still live in cold weather. Now days in winter we must still be careful and do the same things we do in the summer. Keep the kitchen clean and wash our hands a lot.
